Are you ready to climb every mountain and find your dream role? We are so excited to see the talent you bring to our upcoming production of The Sound of Music Jr.! Whether you’re a seasoned performer or this is your very first time step-ball-changing onto a stage, we want to make the audition process as easy and fun as possible.
We know that filming an audition can feel a little intimidating, but at Rockwall Acting, we focus on building confidence and having a blast. For this show, all we need is a simple video recording from your phone: no professional studio or Hollywood lighting required.
To help you shine, here are five stress-free tips to help you rock your video audition before the June 1st deadline!
1. Don’t Stress It: Just Have Fun!
The number one thing we want to see is you. We aren't looking for a perfect, robotic performance; we want to see your unique personality shine through. If you mess up a lyric or trip over a word, just keep going with a laugh! Experts agree that the most important part of a youth audition is showing your natural warmth and excitement to be part of the team.
2. Pick a Snippet That Shows Your Range
Keep it short and sweet! As mentioned on our audition form, you only need to record a small section of a song. Choose a snippet that you feel confident singing and that shows off your vocal range: whether that’s your high soprano notes or your powerful belt. It’s better to do 30 seconds of something you love than two minutes of something you’re struggling with.

3. Check Your Lighting and Sound
Since you're likely recording on your phone, just make sure we can see and hear you. Find a quiet room and face a window so the natural light hits your face (don't put the window behind you!). According to theatre audition experts, clear visibility is key for directors to see your facial expressions. Do a quick test recording to ensure your voice is louder than any background music.
4. Sing With Character
Don’t just sing the notes: tell the story. Think about what the lyrics mean. Are you happy? Nervous? Determined? Every role tells a story, and even in a short video, showing that you understand the "why" behind the song makes a huge impact. For The Sound of Music, think about the distinct personalities of the von Trapp children and how they might feel.

5. Take a Deep Breath and Smile
Energy is everything! Before you hit "record," take a deep breath to settle any butterflies. Start your video with a big smile and a quick introduction. According to Lincroft Music, a positive, energetic entrance sets the tone for the entire audition.
We can’t wait to see your videos! If you have any questions or want to learn more about our other programs like Summer Intensives, feel free to reach out.
