Summer in Rockwall is about more than just heatwaves and lake days: it’s audition season! Whether your child is eyeing a role in a big musical or joining one of our famous Summer Camps, the "audition jitters" are totally real.
At Rockwall Acting, we believe auditions shouldn't be scary. They are a chance to shine! To help our local stars feel ready, we’ve put together this easy guide to nailing your next audition.
URGENT: Sound of Music Auditions!
Before we dive in, don’t forget! The deadline for our Sound of Music Jr. auditions is June 1st. This is a massive opportunity for kids in Rockwall, Heath, and Forney to join a professional-grade production. Check out the Sound of Music Jr. page and submit your audition here before the clock runs out!
Step 1: Pick the Right "Piece"
Confidence starts with loving what you’re performing. Help your child pick a song or monologue that fits their personality and vocal range. According to Lincroft Music, picking material that is age-appropriate: rather than overly difficult: allows the performer to focus on acting rather than just hitting high notes.
Step 2: Know the Story
Directors aren't just looking for great singers; they want storytellers. Talk to your child about the character. What do they want? How do they feel? As noted by the Atlanta Children's Theatre, understanding the "why" behind the lines helps reduce self-consciousness.

Step 3: Master the "Slate"
The audition starts the moment you walk into the room. Practice the "Slate": walking in with a smile, making eye contact, and clearly stating your name and what you’ll be performing. The Performing Arts Academy suggests that a strong, practiced introduction can immediately settle those initial nerves.
Step 4: Reframe the "Butterflies"
Teach your kids that those "butterflies" in their stomach are actually "performance energy." It means they care! Encourage positive self-talk like, "I am prepared and I’m going to have fun." This shift in mindset is a game-changer for building long-term confidence.

Step 5: Practice Makes Professional
The best way to build confidence is through consistent training. Whether it’s our Summer Intensives focusing on Improv, Film, & TV or private lessons in voice and dance, working with industry professionals gives kids the edge they need.
